I pathologically dislike the term "rip"-anything.

What you are talking about is doing a back-up of a DVD or a CD which you 
can then play on a DVD/CD player without any hassles.

The simple answer to this is to install *k9copy*, following which you 
then use k3b to burn the file to a DVD, if it is a DVD, or to a CD, if 
it is CD.
