I did find a line in the Xorg.log that got me wondering:
Warning: Xalloc: requesting unpleasantly large amount of memory: 0 bytes.

Seems to be related to the nvidia driver that caused me all kinds of 
problems when I first installed.
I'll dig into google and see what I find.
