I've been using Kubuntu for something like three years now. I came from 
Open Suse before Kubuntu. I am definitely NOT a techie. Just a simple 
average home computer user.

Having migrated from Windows I would definitely recommend Kubuntu or 
Xubuntu. The GUI will be a lot more recognizable to a windows user.
