An issue with Ubuntu 11.10 with: xrandr / panning / virtual monitor

Hello to everybody!

I've just upgraded a system to Ubuntu 11.10 and I can no longer get a
virtual monitor as I used to do with

	$ xrandr --output LVDS1 --fb 1600x1200 --panning 1600x1200

I have

	$ xrandr --version
xrandr program version       1.3.5
Server reports RandR version 1.3

The issue is very similar to the one described on
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=655212 and ideally follows
the recent message at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2011-October/252719.html.
I am not replying to that message because I just subscribed and AFAIK to
reply to one message would require some manipulation of the headers of
this message, which is beyond my interests for the time being.

Now, I'd just like to make sure that I can go on filing a bug report,
and I wonder whether to do so against package x11-xserver-utils (7.6+3)
containing the program xrandr, or the Xorg family in general, since I
imagine that xrandr may be just an interface.

Does anybody reading this message and knowing this issue feel like
sharing a way to get over it, or can I go on filing a bug report?

Thanks!

Ernesto Torresin
