What's ”all d drivers”? ”All damn drivers”?

Looks like you mean ”drives”, not ”drivers”. In that case it seems a
bit odd. I have used Ubuntu since 7.04 and all my drives always showed
up automatically as soon as they were plugged in. Are yo uusing some
exotic file system or some exotic drives?

The only problem I saw so far was with a card reader that supports SD,
MemoryStick, Compact Flash and a few more card types. Ubuntu only
supported SD with that card reader, at least back in 2007, but I
didn't try it since then, so maybe it works now.

Not much for help, I know, but maybe you are using a drive that is not
supported yet?

Most drivers are built into the Linux kernel if I understand it
correctly, but there are probably some difficulties doing that in many
cases. Drivers for Windows are in most cases written by the
manufacturers of the different things you connect to your computer.
Most of them don't write drivers for Linux since too few people use
Linux, so they probably think they would waste their time if they did.
So the Linux developers need to write all the drivers themselves,
which probably is a huge
load of work.

This is a mailing list for Ubuntu users. When you ask a question to
the list, that means that your question is sent to everyone who's
subscribed to the list. Most of those are Ubuntu users like yourself
(before you left it behind), me and others. There are probably some
Ubuntu developers subscribed to the list as well, but I am not sure
this mailing list is the best place to suggest feature enhancements or
report bugs. There are other places for that. Take a look here, for
instance:
