Ubuntu upgrad from 11.04 to 11.10

I tried the prompt to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10. I found it impossibly slow and had to terminate it twice. Is the process cumulative? That is, are the parts already downloaded to my PC kept on the PC and each time I run the upgrade, are they added to? Or, does the upgrade restart each time I try it? If it restarts each time, the upgrade will take days.
