How can I go back to Ubuntu classic from Unity in 11.10.

There is Unity 2D and many other display managers (XFCE, LXDE, the
various *box's) that are all geared towards lower spec'd computers.
It's still the same Ubuntu underneath, it just installs different
default packages (which you are free to change) and looks a bit
different on top.
Me personally I've been using Lubuntu for several releases on an old
P4 and it's great.
