Gary,

My apologies for not getting back to you earlier and being vague with
my explanation as I was replying from my phone at the time. You can
switch to one of the terminals before or after logging in, in this case
it would be better if you were logged out of the ubuntu desktop to fix
and reload the settings.

At the login screen where you type your password, press CTRL + ALT + F2
and it should ask for a username, then a password. Login with your
credentials, move the folders with this command: mv .gconf .gconf.old
&& mv .gnome2 gnome2.old. We are telling the system to rename the
folders with mv from .gconf to .gconf.old and the double ampersand (&&)
allows you to execute an additional command in one line. After that is
complete you can switch back to X by pressing CTRL + ALT + F7. Login
and gnome should copy/create the default settings for your account.

Please note that you might lose some custom configurations after this,
therefore I recommend you test your system for a while before deleting
the .gconf.old and .gnome2.old folders.

Best of luck,

Bruce
