Missing dialog on shutdown

This is very strange, I have three Ubuntu 11.10 machines and two of
them do not show the shut down dialog.  I also realise that they do
not show the confirmation dialog when Logout is requested - again they
just logout without waiting.

Is everybody else seeing the dialog confirmation dialogs?  If so then
there must be something unusual about two of my machines, but I don't
know what.

Following further investigation I believe the 2D issue is a red
herring.  2D certainly does sometimes take a long time to logout but
it is nothing to do with the dialog issue.
