Logout from Unity session?

No, you are not crazy, but there is a way to get 'Classic Ubuntu' (aka
Gnome).  But, it will only work if you have persistent storage to store
settings, which means you have to boot from a live USB.

At the bottom of the close down menu (as described by compdoc above) you
will find 'System Settings'.  Choose this, find 'Logon Screen' and click
'Unlock', then change the 'Select .... as default session' setting.  You
can also get it to show a logon screen, where you can logon as 'Ubuntu'
with a blank password (but I don't remember if you get the session
chooser).
