Hibernation does not work in 11.04, used to work in 10.10, but suspen/resume works fine

I had to add the "nomodeset" switch to my kernel parameters in GRUB to
get suspend/wake and hibernation/resume to work.

This nuked the graphical bootloader screen & to get that back I had to
manually specify a graphics mode in the GRUB kernel parameters as
well.

With both of these in place, my laptop sleeps, wakes and displays the
graphical bootloader - although it appears very late and on shutdown
is covered in informational messages from the console. Not as pretty
as it should be, but it works.
