I believe that is somewhat of a misconception. For as far as I
understood it, but I admit I haven't read all articles about it, it's
just that the classic Gnome desktop will not be installed by default in
Oneiric. That doesn't mean you can not install it afterwards. Since it
will likely be based on Gnome 3 (and Unity will use that too), it should
be in the repositories. I'm not sure what will happen for upgrades, but
perhaps your current "classic" environment wouldn't be de-installed.
I'm also trying Unity (for the same reasons), but not on my production
environment yet. I've also seen Gnome 3 on Fedora 15 and it looks very
different to the "classic" Gnome 2 environment as well. Change is the
only certainty in life! ;-)

Do you mean the workspace switcher or window switcher? You can still
customize Compiz settings. You can get the workspaces to switch using
keystrokes (Ctrl+Alt+arrows) and also get window previous and switching
between windows with keystrokes (Super+Tab). Not completely the same as
in the "classic" environment, but something I can live with.
