Unity & gnome-panels

I've been trying to get used to Unity, but it's been a struggle. Of all 
the things I don't like about Unity, the lack of a visible 
window-switcher seems to bother me the most.

I read here that you could add the gnome-panel to Unity.  I just did 
that but it appears to be a waste of time.  The window-switcher on the 
panel will only show one window no matter how many it set to display. 
TopShelf will not install on it, I get an error message.  Every app I 
open shows up twice on the panel.

Has anyone had a different experience and actually gotten some use out 
of it?
