black window when I start a 3d app

Why are you using 'sudo'? glxgears will run as a normal user.

Have a look at your monitor settings.  The Monitors program will show
available resolutions and refresh rates.  If there is a choice of
refresh rates, try using a lower one if you are not currently using it. 

You could also try adding 

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.modeset=1"

to your 

/etc/default/grub

then run

update-grub

You can also add "radeon.modeset=1" (without the quotes) on a one time
basis by altering the kernel parameters in grub when it starts up (if
you know how to do this) 

BTW, you don't need to email me direct as I do get everything on the
