Using Tor in Firefox

I am trying to use Tor with Firefox.  The add-on is Torbutton which I 
have added to Firefox. I don't want to use Tor for all my website 
connections but there are certain websites that I want to use Tor, thus 
the addon Torbutton which is an on/off button for Tor.   When I tried to 
use it however I get an error message saying...

"
The proxy server is refusing connections

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

     *   Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.

     *   Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy 
server is working.
"

When trying to adjust the settings I was told that I need to install 
Polipo which is i the Unbuntu software repository.  I did this but 
without any luck. When I ran a test I got the error message...

"Tor proxy test: Local HTTP Proxy is unreachable. Is Polipo running 
properly?"


I am unfamiliar with the use of proxies so any help would be 
appreciated.  By the way, what is polipo?
