Ok, just to follow through a bit further I did an install of win98 on a
10gig partition on a old 386 I had lying around.
The disk is a 40gig matrox.
then I installed 8.04 grub I. Picked up the original 10gig partition.
use the partitioner to create a root & swap and installed.
grub picked up and correctly identified the win96 partition as win98/me,
and both partitions are booting from grub no problems.
Go figure..............
About to do an in place dist upgrade to 10.04 and see what happens to
grub.
