It was a looong road getting nvidia-96 working in maverick:

but I reckon the blame is on nvidia for taking so long in providing
their proprietary drivers. Next graphic cards that I choose will most
likely *not* be nvidia. Ironic that; archives from this list previously
almost always recommended nvidia...
