+1 here on wanting in 11.10 to (at the least -- definitely not 
probably) be able to:

(a) install Gnome shell the way it is now in 11:04, and
(b) have it be an option at logon as it is now once installed

The above regardless of Ubuntu pushing Unity 3D or 2D.
