A VERY interesting perspective that I was not aware of. And yes, I am
adequately nervous about installing non-repo software, as you probably
noticed. :-))

Not your fault - I think I got there from recommendations on other
sites, and I didn't realize the difference you noted.

From your detailed explanation, I would agree. I'll be the Guinea
Pig... :-)
General question - If I try it and it works OK, is it a good idea to
post that on the list so others will know, or is that considered a
waste of list space since there was no 'problem'?
