You can set an option which keeps the left bar visible. It is in the
CompizConfigSettings Manager under the Unity plugin.

I have been switching back and forth between Unity and Gnome 2. Both
have their pluses and minuses. My main annoyances with Unity are:

1) I had to turn automatic mouse focus off, since with the Menu Bar in
the top nav, you end up switching to the wrong menu when mousing across
another apps window.

2) I leave the left bar visible, since I use it as a substitute for the
workspace switcher when moving from app to app.

These annoyances are mostly because most of my work habits are hard
wired in my spine after all these years. It does take some adjustments
and I have my Gnome system customized for my own requirements. I
suspect Unity will allow more customization as it matures.
