need help with video driver on natty

[glenn opdycke-hansen]

Now the terminal window is not appearing when started.  Also the
Synaptic Package Manager does not appear.  (my guess is that it is
prompting for pw but that window is not displayed.)

Also I see that the following drivers are installed, should some need
to be uninstalled?
installed drivers/packages include:
nvidia-173
nvidia-current
nvidia-common
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
xserver-xorg-video-nv
