Window maximisation not working correctly

When I first installed Natty and Unity-2D on my Thinkpad X31,
maximised windows lost their title bar completely - it was subsumed
into the top panel, along with the window controls.
However, I've broken it somehow. :¬(
I discovered this page on the wonderful ThinkWiki:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X31
... and more specifically this:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ATI_Mobility_Radeon_7000
Since this claimed to support OpenGL and Compiz - and therefore proper
Unity - I tried it.
Well, a few hours' fiddling later, I have faster graphics, although
I've still had to drop down to 16-bit colour for speed. "glxgears"
gives ~350fps in 16-bit colour and ~250fps in tweaked 24-bit colour.
Untweaked - no xorg.conf file at all - it gives about 230fps.
But now, windows maximise in Ubuntu 10.x style - with a title bar and
controls /and/ the window title in the top panel /as well/.
I also can't find any way to switch between Unity 2D and "real" Unity.
Whichever I choose from the login session menu, I get Unity 2D,
AFAICT. (It's quite hard to tell, actually...)
Is this a known problem?
