Classic mode is not the same as it used to be - for instance, you
still get the unified menu bar in the top panel, which AFAIK can't be
customised.
In my experience, sadly, most people are very resistant to change and
novelty. It is, after all, what keeps most PC users on Windows and IE
when there are better alternatives available. Part of the art of
marketing -- one of its (few) benefits -- is persuading people to
adopt change willingly. E.g. the advertising of Windows 7 has
successfully spun it as an incremental improvement, even though to
experienced users (like me) many of the changes are steps backwards.
Unity is a big change - I think if it had been possible to do it more
gradually, that would have been preferable.
