Thanks to all who responded - now running 11.04 (in Classic mode). I
tried unity, but was not impressed by the absence of a Menu Bar in
several applications, including VirtualBox, Firefox, TBird, VLC and others.
In Firefox an image of the Menu Bar became visible when "Customise" was
accessed, but that's all it was, an image with no functionality. It also
disappeared again when the Customise dialogue was closed. It seems that
the only way to check the version information is via Synaptic (or dpkg)
and this is not as satisfactory as Help/About.
Oh, and while I'm on a rant, I wonder why Canonical feels it necessary
to re-build LibreOffice with their own private bugs!! It wastes 20
minutes with every new LibreOffice release, clearing out the Ubuntu
version and re-installing the real thing.
