Why?  I guess there are *some* security implications to be aware of, but
for my use it makes much more sense to run the apache server on my
desktop machine.  It's not a 'general purpose' server, it just has a
couple of Wikis where I collect lots of notes and other information
mostly for my own use.  They are thus available for me to refer to from
the outside world.

In particular I have lots of information about our boat (and boating) on
one Wiki, there's engine manuals, wiring diagrams, links to regulations
and qualifications requirements, mooring facilities, etc.  I make these
available to the 'outside' so when I'm on the boat I can refer to them
without hassle.

I did at one time run a separate machine as the LAN web server but as my
desktop machine was turned on all of the time anyway and it was just an
extra bit of hassle to copy stuff from my desktop to the separate server
machine it made much more sense (and saved electricity) to run my
desktop as the server machine.
