Well, I am no specialist, but to me it seems the system itself is working OK. 
the problem is that the USB drive disconnects - I suppose that's also why it 
has to be checked every time.

I would try to connect the drive to another computer. If the problem remains, 
the disk (or it's enclosure) is faulty. If not, then it could be your 
computer's USB.
