I had to first reinstall gnome.  The upgrade had deinstalled it. Which 
was a surprise.  And it didn't offer the choice on the login screen in 
the button down at the right hand side. I had to select "UBuntu 
classic desktop" once I was logged back in from System --> Preferences.
