I've got several USB HD's (2.5" & 3.5", PATA over USB as well as SATA over 
USB) and I've never seen this (although I did have a drive that would "die", 
could no more write on it after some time - the HD itself seemed faulty).

Anyway, I doubt this is a Linux/Ubuntu problem, I'd look for the problem on 
the drive itself. Can you test it with another OS? Faulty USB connector? How 
is the drive powered ? Anything in the logs?
