Just for grins, run `top` and see if some CPU hog is in the system.
I had an issue with that last week, when a terminated application left 
behind a sub-process that was consuming 100% of one of the two 
processors in this system.  Mouse movement was 'quirky' until I found 
and `kill`ed the process.
