After composing a long message, I just realized that the OP was referring
not to Kindle-type books, but audio books. These seem to be available on
CDs, so it should be fairly easy to copy them onto a computer hard drive
if desired,or to another CD. (In earlier times, they were available on
cassettes.)
I still don't see why you would need more than one device to "read" one,
and anyone with a CD player or cassette deck should be able to
listen to the text. Also, I understand that speech-to-text algorithms have
improved greatly over the past few years, (altho I do not know if any of
the
good systems are available in Linux format,) so copying excerpts to use
in any sort of dissertation should be possible.

As to place-holding, some of the media programs have timing counters
built in, as do some cassette players, so you could presumably go to, say,
27 minutes, 34 seconds, and find the place you recently left.

I may be missing something here. . . .
