I have two routers: WRT54GL and TL-WR1043N. The former has the
disadvantage that it works only with up to 54 Mbit/s and the switch is
only 10/100 Mbit/s. The latter has a gigabit switch and wireless N
standard. Nowadays I wouldn't buy a G standard router. However don't
replace the original firmware of the TL-WR1043N. The openwrt firmware
sometimes forgets the connected clients. The original firmware didn't
have that problem.
OTOH, why do you think it is a problem of the router? I'd rather suppose
it is a problem of the wireless adapter of your Ubuntu machine. What
wireless card do you have in that machine? With a card that uses the
ath9k driver I have the same problem like the TL-WR1043N with openwrt
firmware (yes, that firmware uses the ath9k driver as well). But I don't
have a problem with the Intel ipw2200bg or an Atheros card which uses
the ath5k driver.
