I'd be incredibly surprised if Gnome3 is added to future releases,
given its conflicts with Unity. 

Have you used Gnome3 at all? I find it substantially less good than
Unity (especially from the point of view of someone who wants to stick
with Gnome 2), and it suffers from many of the noisier complaints about
unity, especially its inflexibility.
