KDE on Natty

Maybe you can answer another question for me.  The whole point of this 
exercise (switching between GDM & KDM) was to try to figure out how I 
managed to get my notebook in the state it is in.

I had Natty installed in Vbox on my desktop machine so I decided to try 
KDE on it.  I installed it using Synaptic and everything worked.  I 
worked with it for awhile and decided to put it on my notebook that just 
has Natty installed.

The install proceeded the same and the KDE desktop came up. The folder 
in the middle of the screen slowly populated with some icons a KDE panel 
showed at the bottom of the screen.  There was a delay then some music 
played. After another short delay the KDE panel was replaced with a 
Gnome one at the bottom and another Gnome panel was put on the top.

The top one had the normal Application, Places and System on it plus 
some apps I had put on Unitys launcher.  It looks almost like my 10.04 
setup.

Looking at what is on the menus it seems to be a mixture of Gnome and 
KDE apps.  As it turns out I like it better than Unity or KDE on their 
own.  It seemed strange to me that choosing KDM would produce that 
result so I wondered if I had chosen GDM by mistake.  So far I can't 
reproduce it on Natty on the Vbox install.

Any thoughts appreciated.
