Best Alternative Operating System To Ubuntu?

I too am looking at the overall strategic direction and am somewhat jaded. Windows converts who upgraded to 11.04 want to go back to 10.10, the new unity interace is too foreign and requires more effort to do the same tasks as before. I moved from kUbunto to UBUNTU when the kde team dumped a really unfinished product onto the world, then went back to Fedora when things started to go all MacIntoshish in Canonicals take on Gnome. Now the Gnome devs seem to be drinking the same kool-aid as the kde guys, but they spiked it. I tried it, it takes more effort to do less work and seems to be trying to be a tablet interface when what is needed for that to work well is a touch screen and no keyboard.
So like others I'm searching for a distro that hasn't gotten a big head, thinks it drives the needs when it should fulfill the needs, and has not gone all sideways in its thinking. The good news is that this is Linux, and it is software darwinism at its best, so if these latest mutations don't survive, it will evolve again.
