If you don't like Gnome 3, then you need an alternative to Gnome, not an
alternative to Ubuntu. True, some distros that aren't as fast to push
new packages might still ship with Gnome 2 for another 6 months or so,
but no one has yet stepped up to continue support and development of
Gnome 2, so it's doomed to die.
I suggest trying Xubuntu if you like the desktop design that gnome has
enjoyed the past several years. If disk space system resources aren't
an issue, you can even install gnome, compiz and AWN/Docky for the
utilities and eye candy, while retaining all the great desktop
functionality.
