Struggling with new Epson allinone

Recentluy I bought a Epson Stylus Office BX525WD All-in-One printer/scanner
as a replacement of my separate printer (Canon) and scanner (HP).
I chose Epson because I had read comments that the support for Epson is
better as that fro Canon printers. The Canon worked 'ok' but under Linux
lacked a number of features available in the printer.
Sadly the struggle seems not to be over.
Printerdriver software was automatically loaded and seemed to be great;
software to use the scanner I had to grab in 3 parts from the Epson website,
guessing what software I would need, but at last it works.
The problem however is that the printer seems to insist on printing EVERY
simple print in the highest resolution, resulting in slow speed and wasted
precious ink.
On top of that the duplex function to print double-sided (one of my
requirements) doesnt work either. (To be expected if the damn printer thinsk
its printing a photo)
I look forward hearing any suggestions.
Thanks in advance ,
