This makes me think this is a hacked-up install of Ubuntu, or maybe
not even Ubuntu at all.

What exactly is the history of this machine?

Is it in fact a hosted server or vps which has a custom image built by
the provider?

or is it actually a standard install of Ubuntu done by yourself or
someone you know on hardware you physically have in front of you?
