Thanks Stephen,

I split the command up as it seems sudo should prefix each part.

First 2 parts ran correctly. The upgrade part failed as before -

Extract templates from packages: 100%
Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ... dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
 unable to open files list file for package `libgdu0': No such device or
address
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
