Using old versions of any OS was never a good idea - not even with Windows.
However, I see you're trying the latest version of Ubuntu, so you're headed
in the right direction - congrats....

I've read that Unity is designed to use less resources which is fine for
netbooks and tablets and phones, but in its current state it's a step
backward. Any decent laptop or desktop has these resources to burn, so give
me a full-fledged gui over unity any day.

The desktop is a metaphor that just works.
