Is partitioning required?

Perhaps this output is due to:

(from man fdisk:)

"...   fdisk  doesn't  understand  GUID  Partition  Table  (GPT) and it is not
       designed for large partitions. In particular case use more advanced GNU
       parted(8) ...."
