I don't know as I have no need to try and hook-up my TV to my computer 
(be it a desktop or laptop).

I have always found it a lot easier to configure sound when I use 
alsamixergui because any setting which has white speakers at the top of 
a setting indicates that this setting is "opened", that is inoperative; 
clicking on the speakers will turn them grey indicating that that 
channel is now active and its volume can be set using the sliders.

If using alsamixer from a command line then 2 things need to be done: 
first press f5 to display all settings, and press f6 to select the sound 
card you have - the default here is "default" which is as useful as tits 
on a bull. Pressing the letter "m" on the keyboard activates or 
de-activates a setting.
