Serve files over FTP without copying to the root folder?

I recently set up a ftp server in my ubuntu box and been using it.
Everythings okay, but the fact that you have to copy each file/folder(s)
in the root of the ftp server is a bit put off and often impractical.
So, I was asking is there a better way to serve files without having to
copy all the files to the folder?
FYI, I'm using pureFtpd for the ftp server.
