bluetooth no go on Maverick, worked on Karmic

Bluetooth worked on my Dell Vostro 1720 with Karmic installed. I
upgraded some time ago to Maverick and only just got around to trying
Bluetooth - to find it now doesn't work!
It looks like the bluetooth device is just not enabled or switched on or
whatever. There is no external switch and no labelled key combination to
switch it on. The is no BIOS setting that I can see, either. Bit there
*is* a bluetooth light above the keyboard - it's just not lit. Things
like hcitool report no devices. Google instructions all assume the
device is present and ready to go.
When I run System->Preferences->Bluetooth, it says no adapters were
found.
So I'm stumped, with no real clue as to where to begin. Any ideas
welcomed.
Regards, K.
