Just run 'top' in a terminal window to see what is eating up your
cpu/ram, while you have firefox running, if that is what you suspect is
clogging up your machine. 

Without some sort of description of your machine hardware and software
setup, the best I can do is chant and wave a chicken foot at it. I take
paypal, if my Chicken Foot Computer Voodoo<tm> (cfcv<tm>) works... :)
