alt+f1 would not work, but using Tony's login screen advice I went to 
the console and issued the "unity --reset" command and restarted and now 
see the launcher.  At first I didn't think it would work as I saw many 
error msgs and it hung and never gave me the prompt back, but all seems 
to be well now.
