Well, KDE doesn't support pressing Ctrl-Shift-u and entering the unicode
number of the desired char (which, indeed, is a shame).
But that doesn't mean that ® isn't easily available under KDE. I created
the "®" by pressing Shift-AltGr-r. Whether this works for others too may
depend on the kyboard layout used - Compose-O-R should work on most
latin-style keyboards, though.
