Boot problem

Then, instead of reinstalling first, have you tried to boot into 
recovery (networking as root) then
update/upgrade
install-reinstall gdm  (#if that's the problem, and should it be 
ubuntu-desktop?)
apt-get -f install
dpkg --configure -a
update/upgrade          (#for good measure)
