I already mentioned to you that Inkscape can indeed import .ai - I just
opened a AI 10 file in inkscape. This file:
<http://www.cellbio.duke.edu/faculty/klingensmith/Adobe%20Illustrator%2010/Sample%20Files/Template%20Samples/Letterhead.ai>
As does this one:
<http://www.cellbio.duke.edu/faculty/klingensmith/Adobe%20Illustrator%2010/Sample%20Files/Sample%20Art/Cheshire%20Cat.ai>
All the sample files are here:
<http://www.cellbio.duke.edu/faculty/klingensmith/Adobe%20Illustrator%2010/Sample%20Files/>
Note that Inkscape is also available for Windows:

As for AI

Given that you are using AI to "design front panels for electronic
boxes." I think that Inkscape will probably do all that you need.
