The proc came with whatever AMD uses for thermal paste already on the 
heat sink. Thought I'd leave well enough alone.

It hadn't occurred to me to check the CPU temp - but I will from now on.

I've always left the setting for shutdown temp at the default. What 
would you suggest as a more appropriate number? The machine is in an air 
conditioned home but the room does get  a bit warmer than the rest of 
the house.

BTW I had checked for a BIOS firmware upgrade but this board has the 
latest version - 1702 - at least from what my search found.

Turns out the keyboard was the issue. I've got another wireless that 
worked fine plugged in directly, then moved it to the KVM and all is well.
