Help...I have no panels

How do you do that?

I figured out what happened to my Places menu.  While hacking my way out 
of lost panels, I created an empty folder and then opened it with a 
gnome-terminal.  Unnoticed by me there was a checkbox that forced ALL 
folders to be opened by gnome-terminal.
